Potting Shed Plans

Potting Shed Basics

A potting shed does not have to be complex or fancy.  It can be a very simple structure. At minimum it needs to hold your planting supplies and tools. Your potting shed doesn’t really even have to be big enough for you to enter it.

If you do plan to build your shed big enough to enter, I recommend a window as it will bring in natural light that will make the space more pleasant. Natural light is a huge plus if you plan on spending time potting inside the shed.

Shelves for storing pots, seeds, and soil will be a big help. Also, plan a book shelf for all your magazines, growing guides, and gardening books.

It goes with out saying that a bench for working on should be included. When building your own potting shed you can determine the height you want your bench to be; they are usually thirty-four inches.

Potting Shed Extras

One of the great things about gardening is being outside. Extend the roof to create an overhang and install a potting bench underneath. This will make a great place to work as small sheds can get quite hot in the summer.

Add a pegboard over your potting bench and inside of the shed. This will keep all those loose small tools organized. Also plan a wall for hanging large tools. Leaning them all in a corner is not efficient or safe.

Different plants like different soils. You will want to have perlite, vermiculite, sand, and potting soil on hand. The same goes for fertilizer.  Having an area designed to store these will be helpful. I recommend using Rubbermaid containers rather than just keeping the original bags. Purchase matching containers and stack them to save space.

Consider running water to your potting shed, this is hardly an extra. A hose close by will give you a good place to wash off tools before putting them away, not to mention watering-in newly planted seedlings.

While not a necessity, running electricity to your potting shed is something to think about. You can keep a small refrigerator for long term bulb storage (and cold drinks)! Light for those late night planting projects can be helpful as well.

One great addition is a small cold frame against the sunniest side of your potting shed. Use some old windows as the lid or buy a few pains of glass. This will help you jump start your growing season.
